Smuts Farms/Lucerne Agri Investment Group
Established in 1980, the Smuts Farms/Lucerne Agri Investment group has consistently prioritised development and improvement. Initially managing their records in traditional Croxley files, the group transitioned to digital documentation as their operations expanded over the years.
In 1986, the group acquired Klipboschlaagte Farm, a 268-hectare dryland property. This acquisition marked the beginning of a series of infrastructural developments. The farm secured water rights, facilitated by the expansion of the Brandvlei and Kwaggaskloof Dams in Worcester. A significant project was undertaken to lay a pipeline from the Breede-river, spanning 3.4 km, accompanied by the construction of two pump houses, an electrical line, and other essential infrastructure. The initial irrigation system faced challenges due to the farm’s unirrigated soil, causing issues like poor water absorption. However, with persistent efforts and the integration of organic materials, the soil quality enhanced over time. This led to the successful cultivation of maize, wheat, coriander, apricots, peaches, vineyards, and tomatoes.
The farm’s expansion continued with the acquisition of seven additional plots adjacent to the original Klipboschlaagte property. As the farm grew, so did its produce range, introducing plums and citrus to its portfolio. However, the increasing scale of operations brought about irrigation challenges, especially during periods when the Breede-river’s water levels were low. To address this, a dam with a capacity of 125,000 m³ was constructed in 1996-97 as a precautionary measure.
The R 60 main road divides the farm into two sections. By 2008, the southern section, spanning 227 hectares, was fully cultivated. In 2011, citrus was introduced to the northern section. The farm’s layout is organised systematically, with the southern plots labeled “K” followed by a number, and the northern plots as “Kb” with a number.
2017 marked another milestone with the construction of the Lucerne Pack store on the northern side. The group’s strategic land acquisition allowed for the potential construction of a dam with a capacity of 1,200,000 m³. This dam aims to store water available during winter months, furthering the Klipboschlaagte Development and Improvement initiative and enabling the cultivation of an additional 120 hectares.
The Smuts Farms/Lucerne Agri Investment group’s journey is not just about agricultural expansion. It’s a testament to the power of sustainable growth, conservation, and human development. The group firmly believes in nurturing essential human principles, ensuring that with the right management, sustainability is achievable. Our commitment to conservation is evident in all our development programs. Our continuous growth has led to job creation and skill development opportunities, emphasising their dedication to community development and progress.
